Timed Drawing Midterm

Timed Drawing:  This is a project I generally do during our 2 hour midterm.  This setup is most commonly similar to what I do for Art 2, but with the difficulties this year we set up only one still life at school while students were home.  We start with a powdered charcoal ground and then erase out and draw in using erasers and vine charcoal, charcoal pencil, and so on.  Students generally have done something in charcoal by this point in the year.  Drawing using the toned ground is sometimes new to them.  It does help them very much with the time requirement to have this prepared before they come the day of the final.

This year my colleague and I took about 2o photos of the still life and put them in a folder to be released to the online students at the time of the final.  Students could crop photos or work from the whole photo.  All works were approximately 12-15" by 18".

Students are not required to complete the drawing-only get as far as they can in 2 hours.  This year students got pretty far in the time. You can see that some students got to different parts of the drawing first.  Some excel at shading, while others focused on structure and barely began to shade.  This year we used this as a midterm grade, but other years we average it with a project assigned for the midterm or simply as another six weeks grade.
